How to become a train driver

Travelling by train through the hustle and bustle of the city?

Being a train driver at Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) is something very special. Thanks to the Karlsruhe model our drivers drive the modern dual-system light rail vehicles across the countryside and through the city centre. This ensures transfer-free transport from the region to the centre of the fan-shaped city.

Do you share our passion for mobility and already have training as a train driver or a train driver's licence? Then apply directly for our vacancies. What if you have not trained yet? In just 12 months, you too can be sitting in a driver's cab and moving people: by qualifying as a train driver.

You will get to know our company in detail during the application phase. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to the applicant evening and online career day. There you can get a taste of real railway air, as the door to the driver's cab will be open to you during a round trip in the simulator. Experience the world from the perspective of a train driver and ask everything you always wanted to know about the profession. Our trainers will be happy to answer your questions. If you feel that your passion for mobility has been confirmed, you can make an appointment for a personal interview that same evening.

If you also pass the psychological aptitude test and the physical fitness examination, it is "all clear" for your qualification as a train driver.

By the way: almost half of the AVG fleet will be replaced in the course of 2025. This is because we are getting 75 brand-new light rail vehicles, also known as TramTrains.

as a train driver

  1. Your qualification begins at AVG in Karlsruhe and Heilbronn. After six weeks, you will take a written and oral examination to obtain a European driving licence in accordance with the German Train Driving Licence Ordinance (Tfv).
  2. Further training at AVG takes between 30 and 35 weeks for the infrastructures of Deutsche Bahn and AVG, as well as their future vehicles, the two-system vehicles of AVG. You will learn about regular operations and the correct behaviour in unforeseeable situations. You will put what you have learnt in theory into practice on the company's own simulators with the trainers and in everyday situations with specially trained practical trainers. The regulations according to railway construction and operating regulations as well as railway signalling regulations are part of the repertoire of every train driver. You will have to demonstrate your knowledge of the various infrastructures in several written, oral and practical examinations.
  3. After eight weeks at Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK), you will know everything about "driving on sight" in the city and the applicable construction and operating regulations for trams (BOStrab). This station also ends with a written examination.
  4. Back at AVG, your knowledge of vehicle technology will be repeated before you can prove in the final examination that you can put the vehicles into operation and drive trains with passengers safely to their destination. After a subsequent familiarisation with the locations and routes, nothing stands in the way of your deployment as a train driver - approximately one year after starting your training.
