What there is to do

Your job in a nutshell:

As a tram driver, train driver and bus driver

  • Check "your" vehicle before setting off: only if the brakes, lights, signals, doors, etc. are working properly can you go out on the track.
  • Ensure the safe transport of our passengers en route - at the stops when boarding and alighting, but also during the journey.
  • Ride "on sight" in the city centre and always keep an eye on other city traffic, with whom you will be sharing the road in many places.
  • Advise and inform passengers if they have questions or need help
  • React actively if faults occur during operation.
  • Work together with many other areas of the company such as the inspection service, the control centre or maintenance.
  • Draw up reports together with your team leader if there has been an accident or other incident.
  • At the end of your journey, make sure that lost property is passed on and that "your" train is handed over to the next shift or the carriage cleaning service.
Tram driver

Tram driver

The tram drivers at Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe operate our modern low-floor trams on around 73 kilometres of routes throughout the fan-shaped city - a responsible job, as we share the routes with cars and lorries, cyclists and pedestrians in many places. That is why we attach great importance to providing our colleagues with sound training and continuous and comprehensive professional, personal and health support.

Train driver

Train driver

Our AVG traction units are not trams, but light rail vehicles: These are so-called dual-system vehicles that can run both in the city centre and outside on Deutsche Bahn tracks. This transfer-free change between the city and the surrounding area, which people from the Karlsruhe region experience every day as a matter of course, is an internationally recognised model of success. The system change makes the work of a train driver something very special.

Bus driver

VBK employs around 80 bus drivers and around 100 colleagues who drive both buses and trams. The network of our bus routes is more than 185 kilometres long. We are currently in the process of gradually converting our fleet of more than 50 diesel buses to state-of-the-art electric buses - to make inner-city transport even quieter and more environmentally friendly. However,  we are also on the road outside Karlsruhe - and operate rail replacement services throughout the KVV area if required.

Working hours

Flexible & individual

Our trains and buses run from early in the morning until late in the evening, including at weekends and on public holidays - it goes without saying that our drivers' working hours are correspondingly flexible. There are early, day and late shifts, the start and end times of which are based on the route timetables. We do of course take personal commitments such as childcare and other wishes into consideration when planning our shifts, as we know that this is the only way to achieve a good work-life balance. You can only be successful and happy in your job in the long term if you have a good work-life balance. One advantage of shift work, in addition to the extra pay for working late, at weekends and on public holidays, is the additional free time during the day and week, which many of our employees appreciate.

Tram driver or train driver?

What is the difference?

Tram driver:

  • Vehicles: Usually run trams, which mainly operate in urban areas and on tram tracks.
  • Routes: Move mainly within the city and in suburbs, often on tracks that are part of the public road network.
  • Traffic rules: Must follow both the rail traffic regulations and the general traffic regulations for road traffic.
  • Driving licence: Requires special training and a driving licence to operate trams.

Train driver:

  • Vehicles: Control trains that run on the tram network as well as on the regional and national rail network. These include light rail vehicles or tram-trains, which run like trains on railway lines.
  • Routes: Serve longer routes that often extend beyond urban boundaries and are on regular railway lines.
  • Traffic rules: Must follow the rules of railway transport, which includes other safety and operational standards.
  • Driving licence: Require more comprehensive training and certification as they are also responsible for trains travelling on the national rail network.

Health

Support & education

Health

Support & education

Drivers of buses and trains have a special responsibility, both for the safety of their passengers and for other road users, especially in busy city traffic. Good health and the ability to concentrate are important in order to be able to react quickly at all times. To ensure that our drivers are physically and mentally healthy and remain so in the long term, we not only offer regular health checks and vaccination appointments, but also information, lectures and programmes on topics such as healthy sleep, a balanced diet, physical fitness and stress management. In addition, our company doctor is always ready to listen to any mental or physical problems.
