To ensure that our passengers reach their destinations safely and reliably every day, our trains and buses must always be in top condition. This is why more than 300 technical and skilled workers at several locations take care of the maintenance, repair and cleaning of the AVG and VBK fleets as well as the tracks and signalling systems. The buildings, from the workshop to the Canteen are supervised by our colleagues from Technology & Crafts.
Many teams from the trades and technology sectors work in shifts, and sometimes there are also on-call duties - after all, local transport must not come to a standstill at weekends or on public holidays. Shift allowances, customised duty shifts and many other perks and benefits make work easier. We are also committed to the continuous modernisation of our Workshops and technology to make work processes even easier.
By the way - railway experience is not a prerequisite. Any specific knowledge and certifications that are lacking can be learnt on the job with us.
Current vacanciesNothing runs on our railway tracks without electricity. And in Karlsruhe, we even have to deal with something special. While 750 volts direct current is used in the city centre, the AVG light rail vehicles have to switch to 15 kilovolts direct current when they travel out into the surrounding area. Our buses and trams are full of electronics, which our mechatronics engineers look after. Our electrical specialists also have plenty of work to do on signalling systems, electronic display panels at stops, in the workshops and depots and in office buildings. The following also applies in this area: whichever railway-specific specialities were not part of your previous training and career, you simply learn with us.
Our railways put a lot of strain on the tracks. The heavy loads on trains and tracks mean that regular inspections and repairs are necessary. The tasks range from brake checks every morning to the major inspection for the vehicle fleet, which takes place every four to eight years depending on the number of kilometres, depending on the vehicle type, and during which a train is turned inside out, so to speak. Faults can also occur on the tracks and especially on the points, which of course have to be rectified immediately. As the tasks for mechanics, mechatronics engineers, fitters and points fitters in a local transport company are very specialised, we take enough time to teach new colleagues everything they need to know.
The maintenance of our infrastructure is one of the biggest tasks in our various depots. Specialists from various trades are responsible for the work, some of whom are also on (voluntary) call. Whether it is the maintenance of track systems or vegetation - our employees ensure that railway operations run smoothly.
The glass panes of buses and trains are exposed to many stresses such as stress cracks, or unfortunately vandalism. At the same time, they have to meet the highest safety standards. Floor coverings and seats also need to be repaired or even replaced from time to time. Whether glazing, carpentry or upholstery, our workshop brings together all of these skills. Some of the work on our vehicles requires special additional qualifications and further training. We therefore do not expect anyone to know everything when they join us, but plan individual training programmes with all employees.
Need to remove a scratch in the exterior paint or annoying graffiti as gently as possible? No problem for our specialists. There is also plenty of work to be done inside buses and trams. Fresh colours, new surface treatments - all this is done by our team of around 15 painters and varnishers, most of whom work at the West depot.
Our building infrastructure is packed with modern technology - which requires regular maintenance. The maintenance team at our head office ensures that everything runs smoothly: air conditioning and solar systems, heating and water supply, locking and security technology and much more. The canteen team, which serves hundreds of freshly prepared meals every day and takes care of in-house catering, is also part of our internal services team.
