The cradle of local transport in Karlsruhe is located at the VBK depot to the east of the fan-shaped city. The central administrative centre of VBK | AVG | KVV is also located there. At the Rhine harbour in the west of the city, VBK also maintains another large depot with a workshop complex for the maintenance and cleaning of VBK and AVG trains. The VBK railway maintenance depot is located in the Durlach district. AVG maintains railway maintenance depots and stabling facilities in Forbach, Menzingen and Heilbronn. A depot, workshops and another railway maintenance depots are located in Ettlingen.
Our locationsDirect connections between the surrounding region and Karlsruhe city centre - For people in the KVV area, this convenient way of travelling has long been a matter of course. However, running a vehicle on both the inner-city tram tracks and the railway tracks in the surrounding area requires a great deal of technical and organisational expertise. The power supply for both systems differs, as do the signalling systems, speeds, regulations and much more. VBK, AVG and KVV have been overcoming these system boundaries with the "Karlsruhe model" since its introduction in the 1990s - making them global pioneers and sought-after experts in the mobility sector.
Digitalisation, autonomous driving and e-mobility are important components of the climate-friendly transport transition.
We are already shaping the mobility of tomorrow with smart ideas and solutions and are constantly developing public transport in the region. As the operator of the test field for autonomous driving, KVV is participating in the innovation competition for the mobility of the future and is trialling new transport concepts in this real-world laboratory. The on-demand service "KVV.MyShuttle" brings our passengers flexibly to their desired destination "on the last mile" and is therefore an ideal addition to the existing public transport service. We use our "regiomove" app to connect the various modes of transport in the region - be it bus, train, rental bike, car-sharing or e-scooter. In this way, we offer our customers the best possible mobility experience for their individual journey.
VBK and AVG are committed to climate protection with the RegioKArgo project, which aims to shift more freight traffic to climate-friendly rail transport and to use the existing tram and light rail network for this purpose. They are committed towards emission-free mobility, setting Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe in the modernisation of its bus fleet, which is increasingly electric and quiet.
