We start our qualification courses for prospective tram drivers several times a year. The training lasts three months, takes place full-time and includes practical and theoretical phases and several examinations. Applicants must fulfil a number of requirements for this responsible job - on this page, we explain how you can find your way into the driver's cab of a VBK tram.
Training as a tram driver takes just under three months. Anyone over the age of 21 can join the programme, while those who have completed training as a specialist driver can start at the age of 18. However, there is no maximum age as long as you are physically fit. For applicants under the age of 18, you need to have held a category B driving licence for at least one year and have a good knowledge of German (level B2). If you are over 21, you can also apply to us one day after obtaining your driving licence.
In the first 50 days, you will learn everything you need to know about your new job - such as the regulations, signalling and operating rules, technical basics of the railways, as well as radio communication with the control centre and much more. You will also gain your first experience in the driving simulator. After almost two months, you will take your first tests and then begin a three-week training driving period with our experienced driving instructors. At the end of your training, you will take a practical test. After your training, you will have the opportunity to attend further training courses as required.
